St. Christopher–a 4th century martyr–is shown as a very tall man (some stories say he was a giant) carrying the Christ-child on his shoulder across a deep river that might have been flooding. St. Christopher is said to have visited Christians in prison awaiting execution; he was also martyred. He is the patron of travelers and against sudden death (because of his association with the flooded river).
